Kuche tour

If you want to experience the soul of Southern Xinjiang, Kuche (Kuche, Xinjiang) is an unmissable destination. From the ancient Qiuci culture to the vibrant bazaars, here is the ultimate guide to help you explore like a local and avoid the tourist traps.

1. Kuche tour :what to do

  • Explore Kuche Old Town (Deep Dive):
Spend at least half a day wandering through the Menbazaar, Jigu Lane (Drum Lane), Kuche Great Mosque, the Qing Dynasty City Walls, and Flower Hat Lane. It is incredibly photogenic and full of history.
    • Pro Tip (Night Performance): If you stay in the Old Town, don’t miss the night shows! Performances take place along the route from Jigu Lane to the City Gate. Note: Don’t make our mistake and go to the square; the best action is right in the streets of the Old Town.
  • Qiuci Lane:
A more modern and “boutique” take on the local culture. It’s great for photography. If you are short on time, prioritize the Old Town over this.
  • Wuqia Bazaar:
Head here in the evening. This is a real farmers’ market for locals. It’s loud, colorful, and the best place to see the authentic lifestyle of Kuche.
  • ⚠️ The Tourist Trap: Nan City (Great Naan City):
With a 20 RMB entrance fee, it’s mostly just decorative naan boards and a replica monument for the Duku Highway. Unless you catch the flash mob show, it’s generally not worth the ticket.

2. What to Eat: A Culinary Adventure 🍖

  • Jiamaitun Roasted Lamb: This is where the locals eat. You can pick exactly which cut of the roasted whole lamb you want—pure heaven for meat lovers!
  • Alimu Stuffed Noodles & Meat: Affordable and delicious. Their skewers are massive and only cost about 8 RMB.
  • Fresh Naan: 5 RMB each. Key Tip: Buy them in the Old Town while they are hot out of the oven; they taste much better than the ones at Wuqia Bazaar.
  • Local Fruits: Don’t miss the fresh figs (10 RMB for 8) and grapes (5 RMB per kg)—they are incredibly sweet!

3. Practical Travel Tips 💡

  • Where to Stay:
Stay in the Kuche Old Town. I recommend Fanjing Guesthouse near Menbazaar. It’s clean, beautiful, and the owner is very helpful. Staying here allows you to enjoy the night shows and see the peaceful Old Town in the morning before the crowds arrive.
  • What to Wear:
Southern Xinjiang mornings are freezing! Wear layers. You will need a heavy coat in the morning, which you can peel off as it gets warmer during the day.
